Improperly prepared surfaces can result in reduced coating integrity and service life. Up to 80% of all coating failures can be directly attributed to inadequate surface preparation, which affects coating adhesion.
Proper surface preparation includes the following: Inspection of the concrete substrate, removal and replacement of non-durable concrete, decontamination of the concrete surface, creation of surface profile and repair of surface irregularities.
To ensure adhesion of the coating to the substrate and prolong the service life of the coating system, select and implement the proper surface preparation. The method of surface preparation (grinding, milling, scarifying, shot blasting) depends on the substrate, the environment, and the expected life of the coating systems.

Concrete Floor Grinding:
Rehabilitates existing concrete floors through a mechanical dust-free and water-free diamond grinding surface preparation system to provide instant repairs for joint curling, rain out, poor finish work, spalling, discoloration, staining, coatings failure, water proof membranes, build-up adhesives, mastic and glue removal, delamination, ckacking, and uneven surfaces.

Concrete Floor Shot Blasting:
Shot blasting is one step system that strips, cleans, and properly etches concrete floors. The cleaning head has a completely enclosed centrifugal blast wheel. As the wheel spins metallic abrasive (shot) is fed into its center and thrown from its blades to blast the floor surface. The unit then separates the contaminants to an attached dust collector and automatically recycles the shot.

Concrete Floor Polish & Terrazzo Floor Restoration:
Concrete Floor Solutions provides concrete floor polish and terrazzo floor restoration and refinishing services, including: patching, diamond grinding to remove lippage, deep scratches, glue, coatings, acrylic, thin set, or other defects on the surface.
With little or no down time or loss of business while your work is completed, your terrazzo floor can be ground, patched, honed, and chemically sealed using our water-base acrylic sealer to create a brilliant surface finish. As an alternative to a sealed cementitious matrix terrazzo & polished concrete floors, CFS offers multi-step diamond grinding and polishing to provide a mechanically diamond ground and high polished low maintenance floor surface sealed with liquid hardeners and densifiers penetrating sealer that change the molecular structure of the near surface wear zone, making the surface denser and stronger

Concrete Floor Leveling:
The self-leveling Portland cement-base underlayment is used to level and smooth interior concrete, terrazzo, quarry and ceramic tile substrates –on, above or below grade. It can also be used over cutback adhesive residue, metal decking, and wooden substrates. The self-leveler concrete will level and smooth concrete and other substrates prior to the installation of resilient flooring, ceramic tile, carpeting, wood parquet, athletic floors, etc.

Concrete floor top layer removal is the process of removing the top layer from an existing concrete surface. This can include paints, lacquers, mastics, thinset, glues, sealers, self-levelers and coatings.
A variety of methods can be used such as scarifying, grinding, scabbling, shot blasting or even use of an acid. The best method to use depends on the type of coating to be removed.

Flooring Removal:
Concrete Floor Solutions provides flooring removal and surface preparation services using the latest high production ride-on and walk-behind removal equipment.

With little or no down time or loss of business while your work is completed, a wide variety of surfaces including carpet, vinyl composition tile ( VCT), sheet vinyl, ceramic tile, hardwood parquet and planking, epoxy, or elastomeric floor is mechanically removed without the use of chemicals.
After your floor covering is removed, we can finish the job with a concrete grind, polish, shot blast, scarification, and/or successive new floor covering or floor coating installation.

Polyurea Crack Repair & Join Filler:
Polyurea crack repair and join filler is designed specifically for industrial floor applications receiving heavy vehicle traffic, such as forklift or steel wheeled carts. It is flexible, accommodating small slab movement, yet strong enough to protect the vertical edges of joints. Polyurea joint filler is recommended for the repairs of cracks, damaged control joints or new contraction joints in cold storage facilities, freezers, and food processing plants where time and temperature are serious concerns.

Concrete Floor Patching Repair:
Concrete Floor Solution specializes in concrete floor patching repair in low temperature areas, such as freezers and coolers serving the food industry, warehouses and distribution centers. Our floor repair products are rapid hardening allowing you to re-open repaired areas with minimal downtime.

Why Concrete Surfaces Are Prepared:
Concrete surfaces are prepared prior to concrete being resurfaced to look like plain concrete again or to be upgraded to a decorative finish. Today polymers can be applied as thin as 1/8 " to ¼ " thick and stamped, producing a surface that looks just like a normal stamped concrete surface.

Surfaces are also prepared prior to various floor-coating installations in Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional applications.

The most important characteristic for resurfacing materials or floor coatings is the texture of the concrete.
  
Know the Job Specifications
Most job specifications for surface preparation state the surface should be "sound, free from surface defects dry, and clean." Each of these terms is subjective, so it is important that the job specifications, the coatings or overlay specifications, and the expectations of the architect and/ or project engineer are in alignment.

Specifications should also say how uniform, clean, rough, and what strength the concrete substrate should be prior to a coating or overlay installation. See "Standards You Should Know About".

Proposals for surface preparation specifications should clearly spell out cleaning methods, profiling method, and surface defect repair procedures.

Other specifications may include time schedules and acceptable levels of noise and dust. Also, is there time in the schedule for concrete to dry to the required moisture level if water is being used in the cleaning process? If the specifications don’t cover these issues- make sure they get covered.

In addition to high build epoxy flooring and coatings, we have a full range of thin film floor sealers and coatings, clear and pigmented, to seal concrete floors. These installations provide dust control, increased cleanability, and improved appearance on new or old concrete.

Concrete grinding is both a generic term to describe a variety of ways of removing concrete by using abrasives (carbide, diamond, steel) and a specific term to describe a specific method of removing concrete.
Concrete grinding typically uses a machine called a Concrete Grinder that has a disk on the bottom and spins much like a floor polisher. On this disk either diamond, stone or carbide abrasives can be installed.
The term Concrete Grinding is gaining popularity to describe the removal of raised sidewalks with the use of a Scarifier.
